Moises Contreras portrait

Moisés Contreras (class of 2018)—Latina/Latino Studies minor, and Psychology and Italian major—is the recipient of a Fulbright award. Moisés will spend the 2019-2020 school year as a Fulbright English Teaching Assistant in a Sicilian High School in Italy. He will work with students in their 3rd, 4th, and 5th years on topics to promote conversation, foster intercultural learning and bolster global citizenship. Educational equity being one of his passions, he also aims to use this experience to widen his understanding of educational systems and student experiences in Italy.

"I always knew my passion was education. However, it didn't fully make sense nor take form until I immersed myself in Latina/o Studies. Through my interdisciplinary studies in LLS, I was able to challenge social contexts and theorize how education (particularly for nuestra gente Latina) can improve and transform. Without a doubt, I am extremely grateful for the intellectual and emotional labor of my LLS (and extended) familia and their impact on my personal and professional growth: Sandra Ruiz, Alicia Rodriguez, José A. de la Garza Valenzuela, Lisa Cacho, and Naomi Paik. Gracias!"
