This award is named in honor of Dr. Jorge Chapa, a beloved member of our department who passed away in the fall of 2015. Dr. Chapa received a PhD in Sociology from the University of California at Berkeley in 1985. He was a pioneer in the field of Latino/a demography/public policy and a prolific scholar. He was the author, editor, co-author or co-editor of 12 books, and he published 33 refereed journal articles and book chapters.
Award Theme: The Legacy of '92
A broad coalition of student activists and their allies pushed the University to respond to the underrepresentation of Latina/Latino students and faculty and the lack of institutional and intellectual support for Latinas/Latinos on campus in 1992. Students called for the University to address the low retention of Latino students on campus, to incorporate scholarship on Latinos in the general curriculum through the establishment of a Latina/Latino Studies Program, and to address campus climate issues in relation to ethnic diversity.
