This course will examine the social, political, and cultural history of Puerto Rico and Puerto Ricans across the diaspora, from 1898 to the present. We will examine the historic and political settings that have shaped Puerto Rican migration, as well as the constructions of Puerto Rican national and diasporic identity through historical readings, literature, and film. The course will engage with discourses on colonialism/settler colonialism, race, gender, migration, community formation, and resistance as central to conversations on the status of both the archipelago and Puerto Ricans across the diaspora today.
